Raze the movie - a 1st look
Raze the movie - a 1st look
What does the 1st trailer for ?Raze, the movie? tell you about the movie? My complaint about most trailers these days is that they tell you the story of the movie rather than just give you a really good look at a scene that gives you the texture and feel of the movie. The new trailer for the Stephen King adaptation ?Carrie? basically hits the high points of the film as if they were afraid that you wouldn't buy a ticket if you thought they changed anything.
The 1st scene here has Rachel Nichols and Zo? Bell in a emergency light lit room where the 1st is asking the 2nd"What's going on?" Meaningfully the preparation of some fists for fight shows you rather than talks the answer. The next few segments of the film are built around the girls asking why ?why are you doing this?? And the answer being ?because we have to?. That is a good setup sequence especially since you have been given a taste of how intense and hard-core fighting is.
The 2nd scene reiterates the message of the 1st except for the slimy idiot lecture is given by the masculine half of the Haute cuisine pervert couple running this operation, (the Silver surfer in fantastic 4 as well as the fellow with fins in Hell boy), who is are explaining the whole thing as being some kind of existential sublimity.
But this immediately cuts into a scene of a bloody barefoot female walking through a room with obviously the legs of rich people or their guards showing on the floor. So you know that there is a rebellion with some level of success. But there are people in evening gowns in the background so that is a little mysterious.
The next sequence is of a girl who is spoiling for a fight with Sabrina, the Zoe Bell, and this is used to introduce the mechanics of getting the girls from their cells into a fight cell and then fighting. Again the action is intense and hard-core but again it is very very brief. I'll explain my reason for mentioning this in a moment.
The female half, Sherilyn Fenn, delivers the rationale in a very raw way of ?either you fight or we will really ruin you? and closes with a scene in which she is terrified and then another scene in which she is pulling a gun on someone. But I have a feeling that the 1st scene actually comes later in the film in the dining room or whatever of the rich people's house and the scene with her pulling a gun in a prison cell is sometimes earlier scene.
So I think the basic design of the picture breaks ranks with the usual approach to this kind of thing as in ?lure? and ?bloodlines? which both had a actual fight to establish the seriousness of the situation but the other fighting was secondary to the rebellion which freed the girls and got the bad guys. In other words, unlike those films, ?Raze? promises to deliver some actual fights that you can watch as fights, but like those other films or all of those women prison in Manila films Roger Corman made in the 70s, the real climactic action is a rebellion in which the proletariats slaughter the Romanovs.
Because Zo? Bell is doing this, coming off Xena the Warrior Princess, Kill Bill, and her own really really good made for the Internet but then turned into a film movie, she is going to guarantee the action is ferocious and you see some actual fighting going on.
But at the same time you must remember that Rachel Nichols said that the opening of the film was like a romantic comedy, which means that her world and her being kidnapped from it is probably going to be the 1st act. The 2nd act will be some fights, but the main action will be in the 3rd act where you have the rebellion against Mr. and Ms. rich perverts and their tame police officers.
But that's just my take on this film so far. I'm going to buy a ticket, if I only knew where it was going to play. =D
